The importance of transport and logistics in the lives and activities of individuals, organizations and nations, and the need for greater participation in the sector cannot be overemphasized.

This could be the reasons the Lagos State University School of Transport and Logistics (LASUSOTAL) decided to collaborate with the Africa Centre of Supply Chain to expose the students of the Lagos State University (LASU) International Staff School, called young learners, on the vital roles transport and logistics play in the actualization of dreams and initiatives on daily basis.

LASU of course has acquired the sobriquet of excellence in all her activities and academic programmes including but not restricted to the Transport, Logistics and Supply Chain. The most sort after and best university in Nigeria, LASU has made a name for herself

Indeed, the Lagos State University School of Transport and Logistics has been known as maintaining primus inter pares in transport and logistics academic sector in Nigeria, the university keeps making signature and unparalleled achievements with its collaborations with industry players so as to find a meeting point between the gown and town. Her collaboration with the Lagos State Government agencies ad ministries is legendary, which has resulted in a situation where most of the graduates of the faculty are absorbed by these agencies making the students from the faculty one of the most employable from the university.

Therefore the latest initiative aimed at exposing the students of the LASU International Staff School to the career opportunities in the logistics subsector could be said to be a right step in the right direction so as to catch them young as it were.

The event took place at the main campus of the university in Ojo, on Thursday, February 6, 2025.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ugboma disclosed that transport and logistics issues are so basically vital to human existence that they cannot be left for the latter days of life, adding that it was high time that transport, logistics and the supply chain as a field of study was accorded the right priority it naturally deserves in the affairs of human beings by ensuring it got included in the curriculum of basic and secondary schools.

She further stated that the study of Transport and Logistics is not only indispensably vital but also a lucrative professional career to pursue in the Ivory Towers that guarantee a fulfilling future.

She said “Coming from this background, we reason that LASU, already being on the frontline of this all-important academic endeavour, should begin the awareness campaign process from our own children at the LASU International Staff School, opening their eyes and awakening their consciousness to the vast opportunities that await them should they take up a pursuit of drilled knowledge of the career.”

This awareness campaign at the basic educational level, she recalled, is coming on the heels of a four-party Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Logistics Education for Economic Development (LEARN Logistics) on one side and the Lagos State University (LASU), University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the Kaduna State University (KADSU) about a fortnight ago.

The LEARN Logistics bankrolls academic projects for selected universities known to be serious with the teaching, learning and advancement of Transport, Logistics and the Supply Chain courses in their curricular.

In a paper titled Unlocking Your Future at the Thursday event, Dr Obiora Madu, the Director General, Africa Centre of Supply Chain (ACSC), on the collaborative visit to LASU and the International Staff School, exposed the young learners to the vast benefits of choosing a career in the Logistics and Supply Chain discipline.

According to Madu, Logistics is the backbone of movement, moving goods from one point to another to satisfy human needs.

“Logistics involves the efficient transportation of goods from their origin to their destination. This includes using trucks, ships, trains, and airplanes to move goods efficiently. Logistics ensures that products are sorted and distributed correctly to meet customer demands.

“Logistics and Supply Chain management play a crucial role in our global economy. They connect manufacturers, suppliers, and consumers, making sure the products we use arrive on time.

“The journey begins with sourcing raw materials, ensuring quality and securing consistent supply,” he said.

Madu stated that excellent customer service is crucial for ensuring customer satisfaction and building brand loyalty. “By choosing to study logistics and SCM, you gain valuable skills, global awareness and exciting career opportunities. It is a field where you can make a difference, grow your career, and achieve your full potential. Start your journey today,” Madu charged the ambitious young learners.
