LASU Alumni hosts Coconut Breaking Festival to Herald 29th and 30th combined convocation
The Lagos State University, LASU, community came alive on Friday, August 14, 2026, as the LASU Alumni Association hosted Coconut Breaking Festival at the Badagry Expressway Main Gate to mark the institution’s 29th and 30th Combined Convocation Ceremony.
The event witnessed a large turnout of members of the university management, alumni, staff, and students who gathered to celebrate culture, achievements, and the spirit of the institution.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, expressed joy at presiding over what she described as her fifth and final coconut breaking festival as Vice Chancellor. “It gives me immense joy to welcome you all to this special coconut breaking festival organized by the LASU Alumni Association, as part of the 29th and 30th combined convocation ceremony of our great university.
“By the grace of God, this is the fifth and final coconut breaking day I would preside over. I approach today with a heart full of gratitude. We have every reason to thank God for LASU and how far He has brought us,” she stated.
The VC highlighted key milestones recorded in the last five years, including full accreditation of programmes, LASU emerging as the most preferred university of choice in the 2025 and 2026 UTME, improved infrastructure, stronger staff welfare, and transformation of ICT systems that have positioned LASU as a leading digital university. “We have continued to raise the bar in university administration, responding to the growing demands of LASU’s academic and other services, while creating a conducive environment where our students can learn, staff can thrive, and the institution can compete globally,” she said.
Prof. Olatunji-Bello also called on alumni to continue supporting the university. “To our alumni, we urge you to continue to rally round your alma mater. LASU needs you, and together we can strengthen the bond between the gown and the town and make even greater impact on society,” she urged.
She concluded by committing the future of LASU into God’s hands, praying for peace, progress, and prosperity for the university, Lagos State, and Nigeria.
Representing the National President of the LASU Alumni Association, Mr. Morrison Quakers, SAN, the National Treasurer, Mr. Momsuru Ajetumobi, said the festival is a celebration of resilience and unity. “This ceremony is not merely a cultural tradition. It is a celebration of achievements, resilience, unity, and the enduring bond that exists between our alma mater and its graduates.
“The breaking of the coconut symbolizes perseverance, sacrifice, and the sweet reward that follows determination and hard work. It reminds us that success often emerges only after overcoming challenges, ” he stated
He congratulated the graduands of the 29th and 30th sets, describing their accomplishment as a testament to dedication and discipline. He also paid tribute to parents, lecturers, and mentors for their contributions.
Ajetumobi reaffirmed the alumni association’s commitment to academic excellence and charged the new graduates to uphold the values of LASU. “Convocation is not the end of your journey, but the beginning of a new chapter filled with opportunities and responsibilities. You are now ambassadors of this great institution. Carry its name with honor,” he said.
He welcomed the graduands into the alumni community and urged them to remain connected and contribute their time and expertise to the university’s advancement.
The Coconut Breaking Festival is a long-standing LASU tradition that combines culture with celebration. The symbolic act of cracking coconuts represents breaking barriers and embracing new possibilities as students transition into the larger society.
With music, goodwill messages, and camaraderie, the event successfully enlivened the university community and set the tone for the convocation activities.
The 29th and 30th Combined Convocation is expected to graduate over twenty thousand students across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
