Dr. Onyems Okorie: 40 years of healing, one lifetime of impact

For more than four decades, Dr. Onyems Okorie has been a constant presence in Nigeria’s healthcare space. A General Practitioner by training and a humanitarian by calling, he has built a reputation not just as a doctor, but as a pillar of hope for thousands of families across Lagos.

Dr. Okorie, the Medical Director and Founder/CEO of Onyems Group of Hospitals, began with a single private clinic 35 years ago. That small beginning grew into two private hospitals — one at Alaba Market and another in Amuwo-Odofin — and later into ONYEMS B Hospital in Ojo, Lagos. His mission has remained unchanged: to provide accessible, dignified, and quality medical care to people from all walks of life.

“All I know is that I have been practising medicine for over forty years nonstop,” he says with characteristic humility. Yet that humility has not gone unnoticed. At the CITYMAG Awards 2026, Dr. Okorie was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Decades of Impact in Healthcare, recognized as one of the event’s distinguished Global Impact Makers.

The award celebrates a career defined by service. Through ONYEMS B Hospital, Dr. Okorie has championed family-centered care and equity in treatment, ensuring that patients, regardless of socioeconomic background, receive the same standard of compassion and excellence.

His impact goes beyond buildings and beds. For decades, he has been saving lives, restoring hope, and mentoring the next generation of healthcare workers. To his patients and colleagues, he is more than a doctor — he is a community builder.

CITYMAG formally celebrated him and other heroes on July 4th, 2026 at Garden Top Hotel, Festac, Lagos. As the organizers note: “Because flowers are meant to be given while legends are here to receive them.”

For Dr. Onyems Okorie, the award is not an end, but a reminder that decades of quiet, consistent service can change a community.
