LASU: CGNS partners DICT to train newly admitted students, assure maximum support 

The Lagos State University (LASU) has distinguished itself as a breeding ground for sound academic minds and has of course become the primus inter pares among her peers through trail- blazing innovative Programmes.

This trail-blazing, academic innovations for which the Lagos State University (LASU) has distinguished itself in the comity of global varsity administration is again currently at play.

LASU, the Best State University in Nigeria and the Most Digitally Advanced Higher Institution in Nigeria, through the collaborative effort of its Centre for General Nigerian Studies (CGNS) and Directorate of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) is currently conducting a special orientational training for the 13,000 – strong newly admitted students of the citadel of knowledge which is fast ranking the best university in West Africa.

The two-day new dimensional training kicked off at expansive Buba Marwa Auditorium on the Ojo main campus Tuesday, November 4 while the Epe Campus session is scheduled for Thursday, November 6, 2025, apparently making room for the maximum convenience of the vast population of the fresh students.

In his welcome remark at the Ọjọ Campus on Tuesday, the Director of the Centre for General Nigerian Studies (CGNS)  Prof Mubashiru Olayiwola Mohammed (MOB) delivered a congratulatory message to the lucky freshers  as instructed him by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello and told them to count themselves quite lucky for making the final admission list of LASU, which is today, the most subscribed university amongst admission seekers in Nigeria via the Joint Admissions And Matriculation Board (JAMB).

MOB disclosed to the elated freshers that after a rigorous selection process, the institution could only issue letters of admission to 13,000 out of the over 70,000 candidates that made LASU their first choice for the 2025/2026 academic session.

The VC, according to Mohammed,, charged the new students to consciously conduct themselves as worthy ambassadors of the Lagos State University in all they would do and everywhere they they might find themselves as students and products of the university.

The VC also charged the young enthusiastic scholars to make the best of their choice of the best university in Nigeria to become the best in their generation.

Introducing the Vice Chancellor who was unavoidably absent at the workshop for duty call,   MOB spoke glowingly of the VC, Prof Olatunji-Bello as an academic administrator with exceptional passion for students’ and staff welfare with so much motherly disposition that earned her the title of Senior Abiyamo of Nigeria (SAN).

Meanwhile, this caring and attribute of the VC was evident in the fact that she ensured that the entire population of students present at event were individually served with snacks and drinks for refreshments.

The highpoint of the gathering was when MOB disclosed that the Vice Chancellor directed him to gift out ten copies of her recently launched book to ten students who were able to recite the national and LASU anthems.

The Dean of Students Affairs, Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan also charged the students not to cover any act of abuse in any form; even as he encouraged them to report any such incident without fear or delay reiterating the VC’s slogan that says “If you see something, say something”

He assured the new students of the varsity’s readiness to support them towards their career success all the way.

“Don’t mis your classes, whether physical or online. Your attendance is essential. Be focused. Be committed to your studies, the very reason you are here. Be serious and ensure you are fully concentrated on your studies”; he charged the freshers.

The Deputy Bursary, Mr Aderinola, a Chartered Accountant, advised the new students to ensure that they pay within the stipulated time all charges and fees required by the university and through the right and officially approved channels only.

“Be responsive. Be respectful. Be respectful and responsible in all your conduct so that you remain good ambassadors of our great institution wherever you go.”; Aderinkola charged.

The 36th president of the Lagos State University Students Union (LASUSU), Comrade Adebayo Korede Peter inculcated the spirit of the LASU positive Aluta with the LASU-centric unionising chants.

Mr Ademola Adekoya, a Deputy Registrar and immediate past head of the university’s Centre for Information and Public Relations (CIPR), tutored the new students that they had five General Nigerian Studies courses which they must take and pass as part of the conditions to graduate from the institution.

He advised the green scholars to feel free to visit the CGNS office and approach any of the officials for guidance on any issue of challenge.

Meanwhile, Adekoya stressed that when seeking any guidance, they should approach only the officials, not their colleagues who might further complicate their issues by misleading them.
