Prof Olateju advocates establishment of examination banks as repository for exam questions
A professor of Project Management, Professor Ibrahim Olawale Olateju, Dean, Postgraduate School, Lagos State University has advocated the establishment of examination banks to serve as repository for examination questions.
Professor Olateju, made the recommendation while delivering the 106th Inaugural lecture of the institution at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Ojo, on May 20th, 2025.
The topic of the lecture was “Balancing Innovation and Stability in Project Quality Management : The Roles of Challengers and Defenders for Sustainable Development”
Speaking specifically on university system and how to achieve optimum result, he said “Each university should establish examination bank to serve as a repository for examination questions. This resource will support the standardisation and improvement of assessment practices across Institution.”
He further recommended incorporation of virtual space, urging the National University Commission (NUC) to identify and integrate Virtual spaces as one of the criteria for programme accreditation within the universities. He added that such measure would ensure that institutions are equipped to offer and manage online and highbrid learning environment effectively.
Professor Olateju further urged that quality appraisal should be conducted continuously throughout the training period for all disciplines. This approach, he said, would ensure ongoing assessment and improvement, rather than relying solely on end-term evaluation.
To discourage one off examination, he said that the practice of using a specific calendar for one-off examinations as the primary method of student appraisal should be discouraged. Instead, a more holistic assessment approach should be adopted.
On the appraisal ratio, he said “The current 30/70 ratio should be reversed to 70/30 in favour of continuous appraisals, this shift would provide a more accurate reflection of students’ abilities and consistent performance over time.”
He said the the recommendation were aimed to foster a more dynamic and accurate assessment system, ultimately enhancing the quality of education and better preparing students for future challenges, adding that in the realm of project management, the relationship between quality and cost is intricate.
While referring innovation as the process of creating and translating new ideas , products or methods into valuable goods and services that improves existing offerings and generate customer demand, he said that stability is the state of being steady and unchanging. He added that in the contest of quality management, it is the ability of the system or process to maintain consistent and reliable performance over time.
He further stressed that concept of challenger and defender in quality management can be aligned with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) by understanding how these roles contribute to improving organisational practices, product quality and sustainability.
He concluded by saying that his integrated write-up connects the strategic roles of challengers and defenders in quality management with the broader impact on sustainable development goals. It emphasizes how effective quality management practices contribute to sustainable economic growth and overall well-being.
He said by balancing the innovative initiatives of the challengers with the stabilizing efforts of the defenders, organisations can ensure that their operations are both progressive and reliable. “This balanced approach not only enhances organisational performance but also aligns business practices with global sustainability goals, ultimately driving long term Success and contributing to the betterment of society.”
